Description
Just 2.5 hours from Marrakech, Essaouira is one of Morocco's most fascinating destinations. This historic port city founded in the 18th century by Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique medina.
Unlike the labyrinthine medinas of Fes or Marrakech, Essaouira was planned according to European architectural principles (Vauban style) while retaining an authentic Arab-Berber character. The result is an airy city with pleasant alleyways, dominated by the white and indigo blue colours.
The Atlantic ramparts (Skala) offer spectacular views over the wild ocean. The medina is bustling with craftspeople (thuya wood, jewellery), art galleries, cafes and the unmissable harbour fish market.
